TALENTED Stourport brothers Gregory and Benjamin Gowland are on top of the world after securing the first and second spot at a major tournament.

The Stourport High School pupils took part in the Unity World Championships at Newark Showground last week and brought home the top prizes in the Kumite.

They fought off strong competition from fighters from across the world to make it through to the final with Gregory, aged 12, narrowly pipping 11-year-old Benjamin for the World Champion title.

Both brothers also competed in the extreme weapons discipline with Gregory achieving a third place with his Bo-staff.

Proud dad Nigel said his sons, who train at Young Gloves Karate club in Kidderminster and UTX Urban Trix Academy in Solihull had been training hard for the past two years for this competition, winning a host of other medals and trophies along the way.

Mr Gowland, who is a black belt and Sensei at Young Gloves said: “Their achievements are the product of hard work and dedication to their sport.

“There is a World Champion in all of us, it just takes focus and hard work to achieve.”
