A YOUNG fencing protégé from Kidderminster is bidding for a place in the Olympics but needs help in making his dreams come true.

Florin Mirica started fencing in 2012 and now five years later, with multiple titles to his name, he is seeking to start competing at international level.

He moved to the UK from Romania in 2015 where he joined both Malvern and Evesham fencing clubs, now training every day – for hours at a time.

Florin has competed in tournaments across Europe and is already competing against fencers who are much older than him.

After taking the National Champion title in Romania for the U9, U11 and U13 age groups, Florin is also England Champion and British Champion for U13 – winning several gold, silver and bronze medals in domestic competitions and international competitions.

But to support the youngster achieve his dreams, Florin is in need of financial backing, so his mum has set up a crowdfunding page with JustGiving, where they aim to raise £2,000 to buy new equipment and to help with travelling to his competitions.

Florin’s mum, Florina, said: “Florin is passionate about fencing. He has a massive enthusiasm and ambition for the sport.

“He needs our support to be able to buy the equipment necessary and to compete abroad for a better transition to European circuits.

“I want to help him by crowdfunding. Let's all help Florin to see his dream come true.”

Florin’s JustGiving page has so far had more than £500 donated, with one donor writing: “Go on Champ! And don’t forget us when you become Olympian!”
