KIDDERMINSTER Carolians picked up a superb bonus point win against previously unbeaten Kenilworth in Midlands Two West (South).

Jake Evetts got the hosts off to the perfect start when he touched down for a try converted by Chris Pinner with less than two minutes played.

Even better was to follow as straight from the restart a surging run by lock Chris Baldwin took play deep into Kenilworth’s 22.

Though the visitors initially repelled the danger, a scrum on KCs 10-metre line saw number eight Layton Wilkinson make good ground and set-up a ruck from which the ball was spun along the line to wing James Whitehouse, who crossed to increase the lead to 12-0.

KCs forwards were on fire and the whole side was up for the challenge, to the extent that Kenilworth were unable to make any headway.

Under relentless pressure, they cracked again five minutes before the break, when KCs fly-half Andy McLellan glided through an inviting gap for their third try.

Pinner added the conversion and only a last-gasp tackle on Evetts prevented him from improving their 19-0 lead before half-time.

It was unrealistic to expect KCs to be able to continue to play at the blistering tempo of the first-half and with the visitors starting the second period in more determined fashion, getting off the mark thanks to a penalty.

Two quick tries, one of which was converted, then saw the hosts lead slashed to just four points.

With time running out, McLellan gave KCs a little more breathing room with a drop goal and rookie full-back Simon Taylor then sealed the win and secured a bonus point when he finished a nice passing move.
