With the domestic season drawing to a close, England’s World Cup hopefuls are running out of time to further impress manager Gareth Southgate.

Southgate already knows most of his final 23-man squad and is likely to name his group well before the Three Lions’ next friendly against Nigeria at Wembley on June 2.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at the performances of those who have yet to ink their names on to the list and those who might still make a late charge.

GOALKEEPERS

Nick Pope (BURNLEY v Brighton): Continues to keep the fit-again Tom Heaton out of the starting line-up and was rarely troubled en route to an 11th Premier League clean sheet of the season – 7 (out of 10)

DEFENDERS

Chris Smalling (MAN UTD v Arsenal): Played senior man alongside Victor Lindelof in the 2-1 win over Arsenal and handled Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang relatively comfortably. Faces an uphill struggle to persuade Southgate about his ball-playing skills – 7

James Tarkowski (BURNLEY v Brighton): Was uncharacteristically wasteful in possession on occasion, though he did nearly set up Kevin Long to score with a smart back-heel in the Brighton six-yard box – 6

Ryan Bertrand (SOUTHAMPTON v Bournemouth): Facing competition in a crowded left-back field but contributed at both ends of the pitch and came close to scoring his first Saints goal of the season in the second half – 7

Alfie Mawson (SWANSEA v Chelsea): The uncapped centre-half switched play well with some long diagonal passes, but was troubled by the trickery of Eden Hazard. Almost put ball into his own net when skimmed crossbar – 6

England v Slovenia – 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying – Group F – Wembley Stadium

Gary Cahill (Swansea v CHELSEA): Rare lapse of concentration from the experienced centre-back in first half almost set up Swansea, but solid throughout and stood up well under late pressure – 7

Ryan Sessegnon (FULHAM v Sunderland): One of the contenders from outside the top flight who is shaping up as a long-odds bolter. Helped Fulham keep their automatic promotion hopes alive after an improved second-half performance saw them come from behind to beat relegated Sunderland on Friday night – 6

Joe Gomez (LIVERPOOL v Stoke): Showed signs of rustiness on only his second appearance in a month after injury and had a terrible time, giving away far too much possession and making poor judgements, to such an extent the crowd was on his back for much of the game – 6

Trent Alexander-Arnold (LIVERPOOL v Stoke): Pushed further forward by Jurgen Klopp but missed a fine chance to score the only goal of the game. Uncapped and unlikely to unseat Kyle Walker or Kieran Trippier but an intriguing prospect – 6

MIDFIELDERS

Lewis Cook (Southampton v BOURNEMOUTH): Booked inside five minutes for a late challenge on Dusan Tadic, the creative 21-year-old struggled to influence proceedings at St Mary’s as Bournemouth’s passing style came unstuck – 5.

Jake Livermore (Newcastle v WEST BROM): Heavily involved in a committed team display and delivered the pass from which Matt Phillips scored the Baggies’ winner – 7

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (PALACE v Leicester): Produced his finest performance since his return from injury and demonstrated impressive composure to round goalkeeper Ben Hamer before scoring Palace’s third goal – all in front of the watching England boss – 8

Jonjo Shelvey (NEWCASTLE v West Brom): Not one of the better displays from a player who could yet be handed a surprise late call-up as cover for injuries. Struggled to find his passing range on an afternoon when the Magpies misfired badly – 5

FORWARDS

Arsenal v Southampton – Premier League – Emirates Stadium
Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck (Nigel French/Empics)

Danny Welbeck (Man Utd v ARSENAL): A regular squad man but has yet to find a settled role under Southgate. A quiet substitute’s appearance at Old Trafford will not move the dial. 5

Theo Walcott (Huddersfield v EVERTON): Typically fizzed in and out of the game, but laid on pass for Cenk Tosun’s opening goal and was a constant threat due to his pace, particularly in second half – 7
