Stourport Swifts 2, Coventry Sphinx 1

Swifts took the spoils in this mid-table tussle allowing them to leap-frog their visitors in the process.

But they needed a goal from star man Calvin Dinsley four minutes from time to finally see-off a determined Sphinx side.

Stourport should have taken the lead on 24 minutes when striker Jon Griffin found space in behind the visitors’ defence only to put his effort the wrong side of the post.

The breakthrough came four minutes before the interval when recent signing Josh Thompson scored a fine solo effort, beating two players before chipping the ball over Carl O’Neill in the Sphinx goal.

The Swifts started the second half strongly and Griffin missed a golden chance to double the lead on 53 minutes. Chris Seekings forced O’Neill into a decent save and Griffin managed to put the rebound over the crossbar from six yards.

That miss was punished ten minutes later when Ashley Wilkes spotted Swifts keeper Lewis Solly off his line and duly tucked the ball away.

It looked as though the honours would be shared until the impressive Dinsley bagged all three points for the home side when he found the net from a narrow angle.
