AFC Wulfrunians 0, Stourport Swifts 1

A Jamie Willetts header early in the second half made it two wins from two for Swifts at the start of their Midland League campaign.

But the victory was tainted by having summer signing Alex Cowley sent off for two bookings late in the game.

Stourport had the better of the opening half without really testing the Wulfs keeper. The closest they went was on the half-hour when Ashley Parsons-Smith played in Jon Griffin but, from a narrow angle, he could only find the side-netting.

Five minutes before the break, Swifts defender Kevin Spencer almost put the ball into his own net, the upright saving his blushes.

The only goal of the game came from a set-piece on 51 minutes. The home side failed to clear the danger and when Parsons-Smith put the ball back into the area, Willetts powered a header into the back of the net.

Good work from Cowley saw him win possession but his pass just failed to find Griffin in front of goal before Alex Lavery managed to direct a late header straight at the keeper.

Things threatened to turn against Swifts in the closing stages. Two minutes from time Cowley saw red after his second caution and then, in the final moments, keeper Brendon Bunn did well to keep out Jamie King’s free-kick for the home side.
