Stourport Swifts 0, Basford United 2

Brothers Lee and Stuart Hendrie netted the goals that handed Basford the points at Walshes Meadow to keep them at the top of the MFL Premier.

Calvin Dinsley rattled the visitors’ crossbar on 15 minutes direct from a free-kick but the first period failed to produce much in the way of goalmouth action until former Villa star Lee fired in the opener four minutes before the break following good work out wide by Fabian Smith.

The Nottinghamshire side could have doubled their tally before half-time when TJ Nightingale chipped keeper Brendon Bunn only for his effort to clear the bar.

The Swifts started the second half well with Ben Maund hitting the Basford bar following some impressive work by Jermaine Clarke on his debut.

But United soaked up the pressure and after Nightingale had hit the woodwork, Stuart Hendrie doubled the lead when he tapped home from close range after home keeper Bunn had failed to gather a ball into the area.

John Griffin had a header fly wide for Stourport who were boosted when Basford’s Smith was sent off for his challenge on Alex Cowley 13 minutes from time.

But even though they pressed for a way back into the game, Stourport failed to break through a resolute defence.
