No escape for rock bottom Swifts

Stourport Swifts 1 Halesowen Town 1

Calvin Dinsley rescued a deserved point for Stourport but could not prevent the long inevitability of bottom place in the league table finally becoming a mathematical fact.

After a quiet start, the game came into life when Swifts’ goalkeeper Haydn Whitcombe saved Ben Haseley’s 32nd minute diving header, allowing captain Mark Benbow to tidy up. Whitcombe then turned Mark Smith’s 44th minute shot around the post and the resulting corner saw Smith’s header cleared off the line by Dennis Pearce.

But the Swifts created the closest first half chance when Gary Walker’s 45th minute corner was headed against the top inside of the post by Jamie Willets.

The Yeltz took the lead just three minutes into the second half when Haseley controlled substitute Joseph Drake’s cross before drilling home a low shot from 15 yards. But Halesowen posed little further threat as the Swifts gradually battled back with Lewis Pountney’s 62nd minute effort ruled out for offside.

Stourport struck a 71st minute equaliser when Dinsley tucked home from ten yards after a cross from lively Tim Jackson was only partly cleared. The Swifts played out the last two minutes with ten men after Rory Curtis was dismissed for his second bookable offence.
