Final flourish comes too late
1:03pm Sunday 15th April 2012 in Stourport Swifts
Gosport Boro 4, Stourport Swifts 3
A late onslaught almost salvaged a point for Swifts at high-flying Gosport.
Rod Brown’s side looked to be down and out, trailing 4-1 going into the final ten minutes.
But Lewis Pountney reduced the arrears on 83 minutes following some impressive work from Julian Triana and Rory Curtis as they carved through the Boro defence.
With 90 minutes on the clock, Calvin Dinsley netted the goal of the game to edge the visitors even closer, an unstoppable 30-yard strike that flew past Nathan Ashmore in the Gosport goal.
But the late double came too late to rescue Stourport whose torrid away from has seen them pick up just six points on the road.
Dan Wooden had handed the home side a 14th minute lead only for Tim Jacuson to level ten minutes later, the winger squeezing the ball home from a tight angle.
Adam Wilde restored Gosport’s lead with a looping shot off the underside of the bar on 38 minutes with Justin Bennett heading home a third just four minutes after the break.
Bennett was denied a second by Haydn Whitcombe in the Swifts goal only for substitute Craig Feeney to add a fourth for the Hampshire outfit ten minutes from the end.
That should have been enough to guide Gosport to a simple three points but they hadn’t counted on Stourport’s final flourish.
Swifts: Whitcombe 7, Evans 7 (Triana 70, 7), Pearce 7, WILLETTS 8, Benbow 7, Walker 6, Mahon 7, Dinsley 6, Pountney 7, Curtis 7, Jacuson 7 (Taylor 81)
