Swifts held to draw in cup clash
1:18pm Sunday 26th August 2012 in Stourport Swifts
Stourport Swifts 1, Continental Star 1
Swifts face a tricky midweek trip to Rushall’s Dales Lane ground after being held to a draw in this FA Cup preliminary round clash.
It was very much a game of two halves with the home side only coming into contention after the break.
Before then it was Continental Star who controlled the proceedings, taking a 15th minute lead when Ibrahim Benjamin slotted home.
Davion Hamilton squandered a good chance to extend the visitors’ advantage while Aaron Garvey twice missed out when one-on-one with Swifts keeper Haydn Whitcombe.
But it was a different tale in the second half as Stourport’s slick passing had Star on the back foot.
Substitute Calvin Dinsley finally struck the equaliser on 73 minutes - five minutes after coming off the bench - with a well-taken volley following good work from Lewis Pountney.
Towering defender Mark Smith put a header over the visitors’ goal late on while Pountney also went close to seeing off the Midland Alliance newcomers.
The teams will replay on Wednesday evening (ko 7.45pm).
Swifts: Whitcombe 6, JONES 7, Willets 7, Benbow 6 (Adams 45, 7), Smith 7, Spencer 6 (Dinsley 68, 7), Walker 6, Evans 6, Pountney 7, Bridges 6 (Hurrell 45, 6), Jackson 6. Subs (not used): Pearce, Bannister.
