Swifts make cup progress as Brown targets striker

IN a bid to bolster Stourport Swifts ’ goal-scoring options, manager Rod Brown has made a move for two of the Midlands Alliance’s most prolific hitmen.

The club have submitted seven-day bids for Alvechurch’s in-form goal-getter Andy Nicol and Tipton Town frontman Karl Edwards.

Brown is keen for his side to build on a seven-game unbeaten run at the start of the season.

However, after two draws in a row, wants to increase his goal-power and take the goal-scoring burden off frontmen Paul Jones and the in-form Lewis Pountney.

Both strikers would fit the bill, with Edwards already has three goals to his name and Nicol hitting four in six games despite Alvechurch struggling.

Brown is set to speak with Edwards tomorrow before Saturday’s Midland Alliance clash Tividale (3pm ko), but cannot speak to Nicol until week.

“We’re playing well at the moment but we’re not taking our chances,” said the Swifts manager.

“I want to bring someone else who can also score goals.

“I’ve put seven days in for Karl Edwards and Andy Nicol and we’ll see what happens.

“Both have good scoring records at our level but I haven’t been able to talk to them yet. “I only need one more striker so we’ll see what how things develop.”

Brown was frustrated by Swifts on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Contintental Star in the preliminary round of the FA Cup.

Ibrahim Benjamin had fired Star ahead but Swifts created a slew of chances to score, with substitute Calvin Dinsley on target in the 73rd minute.

But they booked a place in the first qualifying round last night with a 3-1 win over Star, with Mark Benbow, Paul Jones and Pountey on target. Victory earned £1,750 in prize money.

As a reward they will now tackle Stafford Rangers at home in the first qualifying round on September 8.
