WORCESTER Warriors prospect James Scott reckons he will benefit from a spell in National League One this season as he prepares to be shipped out on loan.

The 19-year-old lock played a key role in England’s World Rugby Under 20 Championship campaign this summer, helping his country reach the final where they lost to hosts France.

Scott, who has yet to make a first-team appearance for Warriors, has returned to Sixways ahead of the 2018-19 Premiership season.

But he acknowledges the gulf between representing England under 20s and playing in the top-flight and admits he is willing to learn his craft in the lower leagues this term.

“I have learned a huge amount especially having been away with the under 20s for almost a month,” Scott said.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come to a world championships so hopefully I will be able to take what I have learned from it back to Worcester.

“I was lucky enough to be on the bench for an Anglo-Welsh Cup game last season and unfortunately didn’t get on.

“I will be aiming to play in the A-League again and I might be going out on loan although I am not sure yet.

“If I could get a sniff of a cup game then I would jump at the opportunity.”

Scott had a stint at Luctonians in National Two North last season and is now hoping to ply his trade in the league above.

“I haven’t played any National One games yet so it would be quite a huge jump to go from playing with the under 20s to going straight into the first team (at Warriors),” he said.

“I think even the change from under 18s to adult rugby (is big). I was out at Lucs last year and played my first 80 minutes.

“Having to play those extra 10 minutes was huge so being able to be involved in an even higher standard of adult rugby would be brilliant for my development.

“If I could manage to get myself into a National One team and start playing regularly again then that would be a good starting point for the year.”

Solihull-born Scott started playing rugby at under sixes level with Hereford before being scouted by Warriors at an under 15s county tournament.

The former Malvern College pupil has played for England at four age groups and is now preparing for his second season in Warriors’ senior academy.

“I am noticing little improvements in my game and I really enjoyed my first year of being a contracted player,” Scott added.

“I have learned a lot and I hope the coaches at Worcester are seeing that too.

“I had a few texts from them (while I was out in France) wishing me good luck and saying well done on getting to the final.”
