DIRECTOR of rugby Alan Solomons feels Worcester Warriors will be in a “very fortunate” position when their new fly-halves arrive ahead of next season.

After a long pursuit of Duncan Weir Solomons successfully landed the Scotland international on a one-year contract from Edinburgh.

Weir, 26, will join the club in the summer but will face a battle for the number 10 jersey with fellow recruit Jono Lance, 27, who penned a two-year deal.

Worcester’s talented stand-off Jamie Shillcock, 20, will also be keen to retain the starting shirt having featured regularly in the second half of this season.

Solomons said bolstering Warriors’ fly-half department was one of his top priorities when he began the club’s recruitment drive in January.

“It is a key position and you need depth there,” Solomons said.

“It’s absolutely critical so we are very fortunate as things stand.

“We have got Jono and Duncan who are very experienced and Shilly who is a good young player so we will have quite a nice balance there.”

Solomons came within a whisker of signing Weir on a short-term loan in February and he even trained with the squad at Sixways ahead of the proposed deal before being recalled by Edinburgh.

But with the Pro14 outfit letting Weir go at the end of the campaign Solomons swooped in to make him the club’s 10th summer signing.

“I am very pleased (to get Duncan),” Solomons said.

“Duncan is a good bloke and the advantage is that he has been around here – albeit not for a long time – so he knows the people.

“But he is a very experienced player and a very good game manager so I think he is going to add a lot of value.

“You need strength in depth and I think we have got it now.”

Weir has won 27 caps for his country since his debut against France in the Six Nations in 2012 and made two appearances at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

He was included in all but one of Scotland’s Six Nations squads between 2012 and 2017, missing out in 2015 due to an arm injury, and has also represented his country at age-grade and sevens levels.

The Scot began his club career with Glasgow Warriors in 2010 and went on to make over 100 appearances for the 2014-15 Pro12 champions.

He moved to Edinburgh in 2016 and was the club’s top points scorer in his debut campaign. He has gone on to rack up 221 points in 30 games during his time at BT Murrayfield Stadium.

Weir added: “I am extremely excited to be moving to Sixways this summer to be part of a very talented squad.

“Warriors have shown this season that they can beat any team on their day and I am looking forward to working hard to help the club have a successful 2018-19 campaign.”
