WORCESTERSHIRE'S 2017 overseas signing John Hastings has been axed from the Australian one-day squad despite being the joint leading wicket-taker this year in the international format.

Victoria ace Hastings, 31, will miss next month's three one-day clashes against New Zealand as Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitch Starc form the Aussie pace attack.

He has not played since October 18 due to a broken finger but returned to the Victoria squad this weekend and has taken 29 wickets this year in one-day internationals, the same number as England's Adil Rashid.

Hasting's last appearance in the format was against South Africa on October 9.

The 6ft 6ins right-arm fast bowler said at a Victoria training session: "I was very disappointed. I was initially pretty shocked.

"I felt my performances over the last 12 months had probably stacked up and, in my mind, I'm 100 per cent fit.

"He (new chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns) just said I haven't really been playing much and the big boys were back, so that's all I can take.

"I just have to try to go back and prove people wrong again.

"If I can get back playing some good cricket for Victoria, then if there's a couple of injuries maybe I will get another chance."

Former Durham player Hastings is expected to be available for most of the summer, subject to international commitments, with Worcestershire, who view him as an all-rounder with his strong lower-order batting.
