WORCESTERSHIRE wicketkeeper Steve Davies will join Surrey next season.

The 23-year-old gloveman rejected the New Road club's offer of a three-year deal last week and today the Brit Oval outfit confirmed Davies would be joining them on the same length of contract.

Having broken into the England one-day side in the winter, the talented Bromsgrove-born player has been with Worcestershire since the age of 11.

However, with the County’s disappointing campaign and believing that his international prospects would be enhanced at a Test match ground, Davies has made the move to the struggling LV County Championship Division Two side.

Davies said: “Surrey are the biggest club in the country and I was very flattered when they made a move to sign me.

“With a developing squad that is already very strong, I am hugely excited about playing my part in the next era of Surrey cricket.”

The Oval club's professional cricket manager Chris Adams said: “We are looking to build a side that will be capable of winning trophies for many years to come and Steven is exactly the kind of player that will help us do that.

“He has proven his talent on the domestic scene and I hope that by moving to Surrey he will be able to establish himself at the highest possible level.”

Managing director of Surrey Gus Mackay added: “The signing of Steven Davies underlines the direction we are moving the Club in.

“He is an exciting, young, international player and will play a massive role in bringing long term success to Surrey.”

The Brit Oval side are also favourites to sign Worcestershire’s Gareth Batty.
