DIRECTOR of basketball Paul James insists there will be no complacency from Worcester Wolves as they aim to reach the British Basketball League Cup semi-finals.

Wolves host league newcomers Bristol Flyers in a last-eight encounter at the University Arena tonight (7.30pm) after receiving a bye in the previous round.

Despite their much-vaunted double success last season, Worcester were beaten at the quarter-final stage in the cup by Leicester Riders and will be aiming to advance to the last four this time around.

Wolves have beaten Leeds Force and Surrey United in their last two league matches, while Bristol, who defeated Manchester Giants in the last 16, have suffered losses against Durham Wildcats and Newcastle Eagles.

James said: “You’re in these competitions to try to get to the final. We’re playing Bristol who are new to the league but have established themselves very well.

“It’s a one-off game and both teams will be giving it their all to try to get through to the semi-final. We have the advantage of it being a home game and coming off the back of a very good win.

“If we can play with the defensive intensity that we did against Leeds, I’m sure we’ve got a pretty good chance of getting through.”

He added: “I knew Bristol would surprise a few people early on. They have had a couple of setbacks lately but they have some good scorers and defensively they are very tough. We need to prepare very well for them.

“There are no tomorrows in this game. We’ve got to get the job done on the night.”

Wolves also have the incentive of the final being staged at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena after their fans clocked up the miles travelling to Wembley Arena and Glasgow last season.

Wolves chief James said: “It’s a massive incentive but our focus is well and truly on the next game and winning through to the semi-final, and then we’re two games away from the final.”
