WINNING the British Basketball League has to be the aim for Worcester Wolves next season, according to head coach Paul James.

Wolves, whose defence of their play-offs crown ended in the quarter-finals against London Lions last weekend, have finished third in the table for the last two seasons.

Now James is looking to build a team that can again challenge for the title, won for the last two years by Newcastle Eagles.

A comprehensive review of the 2014-15 campaign is under way, after which announcements will be made about player recruitment.

James said: “As far as players coming back and potential new players, that work has been going on since about January.

“There are a group of players in my mind that will be put forward and hopefully we’ll get the balance right, not only physically but mentally for next season and push on from there.

“We now need to take that next step and really give ourselves an opportunity of going for the title.” He continued: “I think the facilities and the support staff we have around the club is second to none.

“I don’t think they’ll be a shortage of players wanting to come here and work within this environment and hopefully we’ll recruit well — we probably misjudged a couple of signings, which happens, whereas last year we perhaps got a bit lucky with Will Creekmore and Zaire Taylor. We’ll look to recruit some exciting players as best we can and have a bit more fun at the University Arena.”

Managing director Mick Donovan said: “I think as a group we probably underachieved this year.

“But it’s a really exciting time and we’ll do everything we can to make sure that we have a really competitive team.”
