WORCESTER Wolves have completed their second new signing this week with the capture of American guard Malik Smith.

The 25-year-old from Boston, Massachusetts, is the latest player recruited by Wolves' head coach Paul James as part of his summer rebuilding process after the British Basketball League club secured Spanish forward Javier Mugica.

Smith, who stands at 6ft 2ins, played for Iowa Energy in the NBA Development League last season, where he demonstrated what he is capable of in a highly-competitive competition.

Only guard Disraeli Lufadeju remains from last season's University Arena squad with a string of players choosing to leave or being released.

James said: “I’m really pleased to have a player of Malik’s quality on the team. He is a high-energy, up-tempo, talented player with a good skill set.

“He can score in many different ways but will also make sure his team-mates get the ball where they can be most effective too. He will be the driving force behind the team on the court.”

Smith previously attended Florida International University, where he averaged 14 points, three rebounds, and three assists per game, before transferring to Minnesota University, where his numbers were equally as impressive.

Of his move to Wolves, Smith said: “I'm really blessed and excited about the opportunity in place with Worcester Wolves. I'm looking forward to helping the club reach their goals of competing for a title.

“Coach James seems like a great coach. I'm sure his system will fit my style of play very well and it will be an easy transition for me from the NBA 'D' league to the BBL.”

Worcester managing director Mick Donovan said: “We are really pleased to have secured the signing of Malik and we believe the Wolves fans will be excited by his explosive and attractive style of play.”
