HEAD coach Paul James admits his side will change their game to make best use of Maurice Walker following a “phenomenal” start to his Worcester Wolves career.

Just days after his arrival, the 6ft 10in forward landed 32 points and secured 11 rebounds in Wolves’ 89-88 defeat to Manchester Giants last Friday.

The 25-year-old was then Worcester’s top-scorer again on Sunday when he rattled in 26 points but it was still not enough to stop his team from losing 94-81 at Plymouth Raiders.

His performances led to high praise from James and a place on the bench in British Basketball League’s All Star Five.

“Mo has had a great impact on the team already,” said James, whose eighth-placed side have lost their last four matches and travel to lowly Leeds Force on Friday (7.30pm).

“Having come in after one training session and produced what he did, I think it was a phenomenal effort.

“It shows what a quality player he is and how he understands the game as he has got such a high basketball IQ.”

The Canadian, who has a British passport, joined from Latvia side Valmiera and has also plied his trade in Italy and Cyprus.

After his impressive first two showings, James says his players will look to tweak the way they play to suit Walker as he believes he can “drag them up to where they need to be”.

“He is that big presence we needed under the basket,” he said. “It does mean we will change the way we play slightly to accommodate him.

“But it is certainly going to be better for the team in the long run. He is a quality player and you can tell he has played at a high level in Europe.

“He is very disappointed with the way we lost the last two games.

“But he is the type of guy who will be putting in more effort over the next few games — not only for himself but for the rest of the team and trying to drag them up to where we need to be.

“I am excited with him moving forward in this league.”
