Jourdens lies on the outskirts of the village of Longhope, just south of noted May Hill, the971’ summit of which is visible from many miles around owing to its famous clump of 99 trees which stand on the top of the hill. This lovely rural spot is approximately equidistant between the villages of Longhope and May Hill, and is just west of Dursley Cross.The market and tourist town of Ross-on-Wye and the M50 are some 7 miles to the northwest, whilst the Cathedral City of Gloucester lies approx. 7 miles to the southeast. Listing and History

The property is a Listed Grade II House, having been built between 1841 and 1851, probably by the barrister Richard Sipon. It is significant that the railway service from Ross to Gloucester was built in about 1855, making travel to London remarkably easy from the then local Longhope Station! The current vendors have researched all the owners since that time, and these have included a Church of England Clergyman, a Wine & Spirit Merchant and a Master Mariner who owned and very successfully operated three trading ships from bustling Gloucester Docks. An earlier dwelling on the site was probably constructed by Huguenots who settled on the side of May Hill and established a business making glass, hence the nearby hamlet known as Glasshouse.


Although constructed in the mid Victorian era, the façade of Jourdens has many Georgian characteristics. These include the smooth, lined render, hipped slate roof, brick chimneys, symmetrical façade and central Venetian fan light between the Doric columns of the front porch. Together, these features result in an exceptionally attractive Georgian style facade. The principal aspects are to the southeast and southwest, the house thus receiving a high degree of available sunlight, and also allowing a beautiful outlook across the lawned gardens towards a periphery of superb mature trees, which also flank the long approach drive. Most of the sash windows have splayed reveals, and the four reception, seven bedroom accommodation has a lovely ambience. There is a cellar beneath part of the ground floor, and this is accessed via a hatch alongside the driveway.

The Grannexe

Typically, a Granny Annexe is modest in scale with just one or perhaps two bedrooms. Here, one has a most generously proportioned and luxuriously appointed, three bedroom dwelling extending to approaching 1500 sq.ft. Moreover, with huge double glazed windows and French doors, one has exceptionally light accommodation overlooking a gravelled courtyard to one side and decking, lawn and orchard to the southeast. If approaching from Ross-on-Wye, leave the eastern outskirts of Ross at the mini roundabout close to Ross Fire Station, proceeding on the A40 towards Gloucester. After passing through the villages of Weston-under-Penyard and Lea, continue through the hamlet of Box Bush and on approaching Longhope, keeping left on the curving A40. Shortly after passing the Stanton Kitchen Showroom on the left hand side, carefully take the 3rd driveway on the left with the small sign Jourdens on the stone wall flanking the driveway entrance. If approaching from Gloucester leave the western outskirts of Gloucester at Over, proceeding along the A40 towards Longhope. Keeping on the A40, continue through Longhope, and shortly after the summit of a climb, take the 1st driveway on the right after passing the 90° right turn known as Dursley Cross.
