CHILDHOOD friends from Kidderminster who formed a psychadelic band for fun are getting ready to release a debut album, after their unique sound climbed to number eight in an online music chart.

Lawrie Boyle and Kerry Furber met at the age of 12 at Worcester Royal Grammar school and now in their 50s, they have become The Cream People.

Lawrie said: “Although we have both possessed instruments since our teens, we have never played together until recently. We hold wide ranging musical tastes, from jazz, rock and psychadelia, to the avant-garde and elecronica. These all somehow seem to emerge in the music we are creating.”

Over the last two years the pair have attended live gigs at the Tap House and Swan pubs in Kidderminster and the Robin 2 in Bilston.

Last year on Saturday, October 16 they had their first jamming session and played for an hour without speaking a word to one another, during which time they laid down four tracks without edits, over-dubs or re-takes.

From then on they began playing almost every weekend and Lawrie, a community psychiatric nurse said he was encouraged by the positive feedback from his patients.

The musical duo posted tracks on online chart, showcaseyourmusic.com and after 1500 listens, they currently stand at number eight in the chart.

Kerry, who plays guitars and gizmos and Lawrie, who plays bass and stylophone are now looking to release their first eponymously titled album on their own label, Cream Horn, before the end of February.

Lawrie added: “We formed The Cream People initially as a bit of fun, but have surprised ourselves with what we have been creating.

“From a standing start we are just approaching 1500 views on showcaseyourmusic.com and we have just seen ourselves climb.

“The feedback has been that we have a very unique sound that is identifiable almost straight away.”

He said they are currently choosing from a back-catalogue of about 40 jointly composed tracks to create something that is accessible but represents what The Cream People are.

They are hoping to play live locally and it is their ambition to play at The Big Chill festival in Eastnor Castle Deer Park in Herefordshire.
