A THREE-piece jazz band will be bringing some rhythm to Bewdley when they perform at St Anne’s Parish Church on Saturday.

Tournesol is a drum-free trio whose music relies on improvisation, with the aim of avoiding routine and creating a new story each time a tune is performed.

Tournesol, which is the French word for sunflower or literally ‘turn with the sun’, includes Will Butterworth on piano, Seb Pipe on alto saxophone, and Marcus Penrose on acoustic double bass.

They have recently recorded their first album which will be released later this year.

Will comes from a long line of professional classical musicians with his father being a member of the English Chamber Orchestra in the 1970s.

Will said: “It’s a really special band for us. Every time we play it’s an adventure.

Every event is different and our music changes depending on the audience.

“There’s lots going on in London, but it’s nice to play somewhere rural and in a nice church with a nice piano.”

While studying genetics at Edinburgh University, Will joined a jazz quartet and started gigging in the city.

Anglo/French alto saxophonist Seb Pipe has been described as an ‘emerging star’ by Jazzwise Magazine and London-based bassist Marcus Penrose has worked with a number of top musicians.
