THE Shuttle’s appeal to restore canal boat Bramble has almost sailed towards the halfway mark.

A total of £3,000 has been raised so far, while goods, such as wood, enamel plates and a prop shaft have been donated by generous businesses and Shuttle readers.

Bramble’s makeover to help it return to its former glory will cost £7,000 and once restored, the canal boat will be used by generations of schoolchildren and tourists to gain an insight into life on the waterways.

Speaking at Stourport Forward’s annual meeting, volunteer Jim Amos said: “We are really in a position now to move forward with major renovation work and desperately need volunteer carpenters to come forward and offer their time and skill.

“Once the cover has been built over the hold, we then need people willing to paint the outside to ensure it’s fully waterproof.”

Pauline Annis, chairman of Stourport Forward, added: “We still have a couple of thousand pounds to raise to meet the full cost of renovation. We have applied to the Gannett Foundation and are hopeful the outcome will be positive.”

Stourport Forward manager Sarah Lange said: “It really feels like we are in sight of our fund-raising goal now. The ladies’ evening for Women in Business being organised by Thursfields on November 29 is proving to be popular and I am sure will be a great fundraiser, adding to this amazing figure raised already by so many generous supporters.”

She added there was still places available for the event and people interested should contact Charlotte Kelly on 01299 827517 or email ckelly @thursfields.co.uk.
