FESTIVE cheers went up from a packed town centre as Kidderminster’s new Christmas lights were switched on for the first time.

The “electric” atmosphere spread throughout the town on Saturday evening as revellers gathered outside the town hall and filled Vicar Street.

Crowds were put into the festive spirit by entertainers Benny Jay, Lauren Alexandra and Soul Town who performed during the afternoon before a screaming crowd counted down from 10 and the lights were turned on just before 5pm.

It was a day to remember for nine-year-old Kieran Wright who won a competition to push the button, lighting up the town. He was assisted by Father Christmas, Kidderminster Mayor John Aston and carnival queen Hannah Cornish and her court.

The new Christmas lights were part of a deal between Wyre Forest District Council and MK Illuminations, which also organises lighting in cities such as Manchester and Sheffield.

Mr Aston said: “As the excitement built up the atmosphere was really electric and it was a fantastic experience for Kieran, it went extremely well and the streets were packed. People were very impressed and surprised by the new lights.

“My favourite part was being in the crowd after the lights went on, shaking hands, wishing people a merry Christmas and being part of the celebrations. I am grateful to the people of Kidderminster for turning out for such a lovely event.”

Lauren, 15, performed on stage twice during the afternoon.

She said: ““There was a wonderful atmosphere. I love singing Christmas songs and watching people join in was brilliant, I definitely feel in the Christmas mood now.”

Organiser Amy Smith, Wyre Forest District Council’s leisure development officer, said there was a “great community feel” in the town.

“There was an excellent turnout and the crowds went back all the way up Vicar Street - it was packed. Everything went to plan, we have had a lot of positive feedback and people really liked it,” she added.
