PUPILS and staff from a Kidderminster school have bade farewell to a much-loved dinner lady, who had been on hand to help at lunchtimes for more than 28 years.

Rhona Cerrone, of Brecknell Rise, waved goodbye to youngsters at Marlpool First School and is looking forward to her well-earned retirement.

The 65-year-old, known by countless Wyre Forest residents through her role, was guest of honour at a special assembly on her last day.

Mrs Cerrone, who worked as a cook at Wilden First School in 1968 before moving to Marlpool, was presented with a card made by pupils, a bouquet, shopping vouchers and a set of pearl earrings.

The keen ballroom dancer, married to John for 43 years, said she "did not expect such a wonderful send-off" and admitted to feeling mixed emotions.

She explained: "It was a lovely day, one I will never forget. I did think they might be planning to do something but nothing like that. It is strange because I am looking forward to having a rest but I will miss everyone so much. I have taken away so many memories.

"I do get stopped in the street quite a lot by people who know me from the school. That is always nice."

Mrs Cerrone, who has a daughter, Debbie and grandson, Matthew, is hoping to spend more time on Kidderminster Town Hall's dancefloor.

Sarah Power, headteacher at the Marlpool Lane school since August, said the long-serving member of staff would "be very hard to replace".

She added: "When you think how long she has been here it is just incredible. I have only been here a short time but it is obvious how much everyone loves her.

"All the children know her because of what she does at lunchtimes but there is so much more.

"She helps us with a lot of other things. We all wish her the best and hope to see her many more times in the future."
