A SIX-year-old boy who was hit by a car while riding his bike has escaped serious injury despite not wearing a helmet, police said.

Police said the youngster, who suffered minor cuts and grazes to his head, was "incredibly lucky" to have not been more seriously injured following the collision with a Renault Clio this morning.

The driver of the car, a man in his 80s, was not injured in the incident, which happened in Cornwall Avenue at about 11.45am.

Officers are now urging all cyclists to wear helmets while out riding.

A West Mercia Police Spokesman said: "[The boy] was incredibly lucky to have suffered minor injuries considering the circumstances.

"We're asking all cyclists to wear helmets no matter what their age."

The boy was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for treatment.
