A £5.5 million primary school in Stourport was given the green light yesterday by Worcestershire County Council.

The planning and regulatory committee unanimously approved the new Burlish Park Primary School, in Windermere Way, subject to Secretary of State intervention.

The school will replace the current building, designed and built in the 1960s, and be a combination of single and two-storey.

It will include two new junior sports pitches, grassed area with outdoor performance space and a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). Proposals also include a car park and storage for 48 bicycles.

Sustainable features include insulation, air tightness and efficient gas boilers. Construction is set to begin in Spring 2014 and pupils should take their place in the new school from September 2015.

The current school building will remain open throughout with pupils not needing to move sites as work takes place.

Rob Adams, county council planning and regulatory committee chairman, said: "This is a very welcome project not only for the pupils and future students, who will be able to enjoy the benefits of a modern and sustainable new school building, but also for the community.

"It's clear from the plans that the intention is to provide an inspiring learning environment that's a central part of the community. The committee was pleased to approve these proposals."

Simon Geraghty, county council cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, said: "This major investment will bring many benefits for the pupils, parents and staff at Burlish Park Primary School.

“The new building will feature many modern technological and sustainable features, which will help equip young people with important skills they'll require for their futures."
