KIDDERMINSTER Carolians picked up another valuable two points to consolidate their mid-table position in Midlands West Three North with a 26-7 win against Old Yardleians.

In perfect conditions, the Marlpool Lane men played some of their best rugby of the season in the first-half and opened the scoring after just five minutes when 17-year-old winger Richard Sollom scored his first senior try, which was well converted by Tom Scandrett.

KCs continued to create chances with good running rugby and midway through the half hooker Tom Mayer went over from an opening created by Matt Rigsby's driving run.

Under pressure Yards lost a player for dissent and after failing to capitalise on some golden opportunities KCs eventually extended their lead.

Number eight Rob Delahay, who had a great game, showed a turn of pace to score in the corner after centre Rob Parker had breached the visitors defence.

Scandrett again added the extras to give KC's a 19-0 half-time lead which should have been a lot more comfortable.

Five minutes into the second-half Parker capped a tremendous all-round performance with a superb individual try, collecting a Yards kick 30 metres from the visitors line and weaving through their defence to score under the posts.

Scandrett added another two points but apart from some exciting counter attacks from full-back James Whitehouse, KCs then went off the boil.

Yards opened their account with a try under the posts, duly converted, from a five-metre scrum.

The match finished rather messily with Rigsby yellowed-carded for a late tackle and KCs reduced to 13 men when Matt Bennett was harshly given a red card following an off the ball scuffle and a Yards player was yellow carded.

But victory was the main thing for KCs who were happy to turn the tables on the Birmingham side after losing to them only five weeks ago.

Player coach Andy Stooksbury said: "It was a tremendous first-hlaf performance, we played, without doubt, the best rugby of the season to date and could and should have led by a lot more.

"It was nice to see Rich Sollom come into the side and show a lot of potential, while Rob Delahey and Rob Parker are both playing to the top of ther game and the whole side is showing loads of confidence."

Stooksbury expects KCs to climb the table when they return to action in the New Year.

"Fitness levels are good and we will be looking to move up the table in the second half of the season," he added.

"We need to be more clinical in our finishing as we should have scored more points against Old Yardleians.

KCs entertain Bridgnorth in a friendly at Marlpool Lane at 2.15pm on Saturday.
