On Saturday 26 April Club members gathered for a day of service and action, inspired by a recent speaker from the Hoima Partnership Project. On hearing about the needs of young mothers and new born babies for basic birthing sheets, premature baby clothes and hats to prevent heat loss, we set to and produced 53 delivery sheets and over 50 hats and jackets and premature baby outfits. As with all Soroptimist activities food, fun and fellowship featured with a “bring and share” lunch.

The Basingstoke Hoima Partnership is spearheaded by dedicated British midwives. Hoima in Uganda has more than 10 times the rates of infant and maternal mortality of the UK and often this is due to a lack of very basic facilities such as warm and clean sheets and newborn clothes. Soroptimists believe that access to high standards of heath care for women and girls helps to build sustainable communities, through their being able to access education and employment and extending their life expectancy to support their families.

Often this can be through the most practical of help such as this. Locally our commitment to the Food Bank is similar – basic fuel to grow and learn.
