WYRE Forest’s continuing sporting excellence was celebrated last night at the District Council’s Sports Awards.

Many of the great and the good from the area descended on Stourport Sports Club to recognise the achievements of teams and individuals over the last 12 months.

Samurai Judo Club were the biggest winners at the evening, scooping three awards. The 35-year-old outfit were club of the year for the ninth time, while youngsters Darcie Hancocks and Nathan Gallacher were named junior female and male sports people for 2014.

Kidderminster and Stourport AC – who boast 120 junior members, 50 seniors and 11 coaches – scooped the development club, while chairman Ron Oliver was named unsung hero for his efforts.

Recently retired London 2012 swimmer Amy Smith, who was also set to be guest speaker, was named senior sportswoman, while Kidderminster athlete Sam Perks took the senior sportsman prize.

Elaine Gale was presented with the coach of the year gong and Alan Griffiths, of Severn Valley Velo Cycling Club, took home the volunteer award.

Wheelchair dancer Samantha Leake’s bravery and determination to bounce back from illness saw her presented with the disability spokesperson award, and Bewdley Town FC’s under-14s were named junior team for 2014.

Wyre Forest district councillor Anne Hingley, who is cabinet member for health, well-being and housing, said: “We celebrated those who have excelled or gone the extra mile for sport in the community. We thank all the local sports people for their continued commitment and inspiring contribution.”

Kay Higman addressed the assembled winners, while council chairman Cllr Stephen Williams presented the silverware to winners.
