A DISAPPOINTING result for Bewdley Town in Saturday's West Midlands League premier division clash at Lye Town has not knocked manager Craig Payton's confidence in his team.

The 4-2 reverse has only served to make the manager upbeat about the current league campaign.

And his faith was restored further when they bounced back to beat Ellesmere Rangers 5-1 after extra time in the League Cup on Tuesday.

"It's the second time this season that I've had to give the lads some home truths at half-time," said Payton after the Lye defeat.

"But they responded well, came out the traps and kept coming at the opposition."

Bewdley trailed 3-0 at the break but pulled two back in the second-half from an own goal and Chris Hough's strike before Jan Mulders missed a penalty.

"I think if the penalty would have gone in, we'd have definitely got something from the game. But fair play to Jan, he stepped up to take it and it was just one of those things," Payton added.

Lye notched a fourth goal late on in the game to dash any hopes of an away point for the visiting side.

Bewdley progressed in the League Cup on Tuesday night. After going in at half-time 1-0 down at Ribbesford Meadows, they hit back in the second-half when Chris Bow converted a penalty.

With the tie going to extra-time at 1-1, Town ran riot and added four goals to comfortably beat the visitors 5-1, with Jamie Hart, Graham Abbis and Ben McLaughlin amongst the scorers Bewdley host Ellesmere for the second time this week on Saturday. The league fixture kicks off at 3pm. Sam Pountney returns after a two-match ban.

Bewdley Reserves were dumped out of the West Midlands Division Two League Cup by Warstone Wanderers 1-0 on Saturday, although boss Rich Downey was encouraged by the performance.

"We played much better than the previous two weeks and with a full bench we had a bit more competition for places" he said.

"The goal was unlucky and now we're out of the cup, but hopefully we can concentrate on pulling away from near the bottom of the league," added Downey, whose side face Warstone again in Division Two on Saturday, this time away from home.

Chaddesley Corbett had to forfeit their League Cup home game with Heath Town on Saturday - prompting boss Gary Moore to quit the club.

With only half a dozen players turning up, Chaddesley were unable to field a team and it proved to be the last straw for Moore, who only took over in the summer.

"Sadly the ambitions of the committee and the players at Chaddesley don't seem to match those of myself and my management team and I won't stand for that," stormed Moore, who had led Corbett to the edge of the Division Two promotion frame.

They travel to Brereton Town on Saturday in West Midlands League Division Two.
