A CAMPAIGNING Hagley doctor gave medical students a once in a lifetime experience when he brought along two former Guantanamo Bay inmates to a talk on ethics and torture.
Dr David Nicholl campaigned for more than a decade to help free Shaker Aamer from the US camp in Cuba and he was finally released without charge in autumn 2015.
The consultant neurologist had also campaigned for fellow inmate Moazzam Begg's earlier release.
But he never could have imagined standing side by side with both - while giving a talk to medical students at the University of Birmingham.
He said: "I've given the same talk for 12 years on doctors, ethics, torture and Guantanamo. This was the first time I've brought anyone in to talk to the students. It was pretty unique."
Dr Nicholl, a member of human rights charities Reprieve and Amnesty International, said he couldn't put into words how it felt to have both Mr Aamer and Mr Begg attend the lecture.
The doc was also one of more than 70 people across the country who recently took part in #FastForJustice - a day of fasting to highlight the plight of hunger striking detainees in Guantanamo Bay who, according to Reprieve, are being denied access to basic medical care and left to starve - under a new practice brought in by the Trump administration.
