A SCHOOL in Hartlebury went back in time as it celebrated a special birthday at the end of the summer term.

Pupils and staff at Hartlebury Church of England Primary donned Victorian outfits to mark 140 years since the school first opened its doors, as part of a week of fun events.

Among the activities they took part in, they visited the Black Country Living Museum to look at the Victorian school there and discover how education has changed in the past few decades.

Children also took a closer look at the differences of Hartlebury Primary today and with when it opened back in 1878.

When the school celebrated its 100th birthday in 1978, it was given a royal seal of approval when Prince Phillip visited.

Since 2011 Hartlebury Primary has doubled in size and two new classrooms will be built during the autumn term to cater for an increased intake, which will include accepting children as young as three for the first time.

Head teacher Caroline Unitt said: “We celebrated our 140th birthday in style with a Victorian Week.

“The children spent a whole week in a Victorian school, dressing up and finding out how different school was in those times. Great fun was had and some even preferred their Victorian classroom!”
