VANDALS forced the closure of a popular Kidderminster nature reserve after damaging a wooden boardwalk and leaving it in a dangerous state.

Wyre Forest District Council bosses described the incident, at Spennells Nature Reserve, as a “disgrace” and added that the attack had affected families’ enjoyment of the site during the busiest time of the year.

The damage was so severe that the whole reserve was initially closed but parts have since been reopened. It is expected to be fully operational again in around two weeks.

Work to completely replace the path have also been brought forward and anyone with information on the incident is being urged to contact police.

Councillor Juliet Smith, cabinet member for culture, leisure and community protection said: “Last weekend’s vandal attack has destroyed the wooden boardwalk through Spennells Nature Reserve beyond repair.

“This is a popular destination for local residents and visitors and it is a disgrace that the mindless actions of vandals can deprive people from fully enjoying the nature reserve during the busy summer months.

“The damage caused to the footpath led us to close the whole reserve as it posed a real danger to visitors.

“Contractors have since managed to make half of the reserve safe for visitors with the site fully re-opening in around two weeks.

“We have also brought forward our plans to replace the boardwalk with a new pathway. Works to reinstate the reserve path are set to be completed by the end of September.

“Thankfully the majority of visitors take great pride in our wonderful parks and open spaces by treating them with the respect they deserve.”

Anyone with information on the criminal damage is urged to contact West Mercia Police on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
