TWO wounded military veterans who have just completed a 1,000 charity mile walk across America are set to visit a Great Witley school next week.

Kev Carr and Jonny Burns took part in the ‘Walk of America’ expedition and will be at Abberley Hall School on September 28 to share their experiences with a public audience.

The expedition, which saw three British and three American veterans walk from the west to the east coast of the US over a 12 week period, finished with a celebration at the White House with former vice president Joe Biden.

Victoria Beswick, marketing director at Abberley Hall, said: “We are very honoured to have been chosen as a venue for the veterans’ visit which has been arranged as part of our major WWI centenary commemorations and through a parent who has links with the organisers.

“All pupils and parents are really looking forward to hearing about this amazing expedition and we are hoping as many members of the public will come along too.”

Starting in Los Angeles on the June 2, the walk was created as a platform to tell the stories of wounded veterans and their individual journeys from injury to the present day and more specifically to engage in a wider conversation around mental health.

It also raised vital funds for veterans both sides of the Atlantic against the background of the centenary commemorations of WW1, a conflict which saw British and American soldiers fighting side by side.

The free event at Abberley Hall will be held on Friday, September 28, from 6.30pm in the school’s Ashton Hall.
