A CYCLIST was killed today (Monday, October 22) and another injured following a crash with a HGV lorry on a busy Hartlebury road.
Police have arrested a man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the incident, which happened on the A449 near its junction with Manor Lane, Waresley, on the Worcester-bound carriageway at around 11am this morning.
Paramedics battled in vain to save the male cyclist - a Brierley Hill resident aged in his 60s - but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said formal identification is due to take place and his family have been informed.
The second cyclist - a man also aged in his 60s from Hagley - has been taken to Worcestershire Royal for further treatment while the lorry driver was uninjured.
A 48-year-old-man from Halesowen has been arrested for causing death by dangerous driving. Investigations are ongoing.
The road was closed for a number of hours as investigations were being carried out.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “A police vehicle was only seconds away after the collision had happened. In addition, an off-duty paramedic and the crew of a WMAS non-emergency patient transport vehicle all stopped to provide assistance.
“Sadly, despite all of the efforts, it was not possible to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.
“The second cyclist was treated at the scene before being taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further assessment and continued treatment. The lorry driver was uninjured.”
Officers are keen to speak with anyone who saw the incident, was in the area at the time, or has dashcam footage of the collision.
Witnesses should contact West Mercia Police via 101 quoting incident 215s of 22 October 2018.
