A KIDDERMINSTER church has refurbished its kitchen thanks to a £10,000 donation from lottery project Big Local DY10.

The kitchen space at St George’s Church – which caters for a host of community groups in addition to children’s parties – was in desperate need of repair.

Rev Hugh Burton, team rector for the Kidderminster East parish, said: "The kitchen was completely dilapidated and with groups coming in wanting to cater for parties, it was a disgrace.

"We were struggling to work out how to find funds to renovate it so we are really grateful to Big Local DY10 for providing them."

One of the church’s parishioners, John Stevenson, was also a partnership member of Big Local DY10 and it was he who initiated the grant application.

Mr Stevenson has sadly since passed away but the new kitchen is adorned with a plaque in his memory.

Rev Burton added: “John was a lovely man who had a real impact on the local community."

Brenda Lines, chair of Big Local DY10, said: “This is what Big Local is all about – engaging and supporting the community with projects that have a long shelf life.”

Big Local DY10 is a Lottery-funded scheme run by people who live, work, study or volunteer in the Horsefair, Greenhill and Broadwaters areas of Kidderminster.

The partnership has £1m of Big Lottery funds to invest in the area over a ten-year period. For more information, visit biglocaldy10.org or find the group on Facebook.
