A FOOTBALL tournament was held at a Chaddesley Corbett school in memory of Kidderminster pupil Matty Thacker, who died in a car crash 12 years ago.

Winterfold School hosted its annual under 11's Matty Thacker Shield football tournament on Wednesday January 23, which saw 13 teams from Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Wolverhampton and Warwick schools compete.

Matthew Thacker, of Hillgrove Crescent, and his father, John, 43, were tragically killed in a car crash in October 2007.

Matthew's sister, Emma, who was 15 at the time, also suffered a broken pelvis in the crash.

The 10-year-old, known as Matty, was a pupil at Winterfold House School when he died.

A spokesperson from Winterfold school said: "Matty loved his sport and to see thirteen under 11 teams playing with smiles on their faces and loving their sport, is a wonderful way of remembering him.

"It was also lovely to see his Mother, Susie, watching the afternoon of football."

Three of the six Semi-Finals in the Shield, Cup and Plate competitions went to golden goal and then to penalty shoot outs.

The Winterfold team went out in the Semi-Final of the Plate competition, which was won by Hereford Cathedral School.

The Cup was won by Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School, whilst the main Shield was won by King’s Hawford, who beat Warwick in the Final.
