IT is the perfect time for me to give my half-term report on the teams in the Betfred Super League.

With 14 games now gone of the regular season we can get a true read of where each side is at – with some certainly not pretty and others looking the real deal!

Starting of course with the league leaders, and clear favourites with title sponsors Betfred, St Helens.

What more can I say? Forgiving the one slip up in the South of France, the Saints get an A+ with some of the stand out performers of Super League, including Jonny Lomax, James Roby and Luke Thompson, the boys are on track to challenge for silverware come the business end of the year.

As we well know, nothing is won in May but I think major lessons have been learnt, experience gained and for me a far stronger squad has emerged this season. Fingers crossed we will go one better than last year and win the Grand Final – which is a good bet at 5/4 with Betfred! I’m going to give the lads a 9/10 for their season to date.

Next up it’s Warrington, who were tipped up for success at the start of the season and have shown enough quality this term to stay well and truly on our tails.

Three defeats to Catalans, Saints and Salford will have brought the fans back down to reality a little, but in Blake Austin they certainly have gained a quality player who loves to play. Coach Steve Price has worked hard to stiffen up the Wire defence to match their free-flowing attack and they’re undoubtedly a huge threat to fellow contenders. A solid 8/10 from me.

I tell you what, Wakefield have emerged this campaign as a team I love to watch!

Probably the over-achievers of Super League in the past three seasons, gaffer Chris Chester has done a phenomenal job and put together a team who really believe they can challenge the big boys. Trinity are by far the biggest pack in the Betfred Super League but have had to deal with some major injury problems, made worse during last weekend’s dramatic win over Huddersfield with the season ending injury to Tinirau Arona. They will always be a threat, and they’re fully deserving of a 7/10.

I’m going to give that same score to our continental cousins, currently sitting in 4th place, Catalans.

The Dragons have been a hot and cold team so far this season, but when they hit form they can really play... and who’d have thought they’d be so far ahead of Wigan before their historic match at FC Barcelona’s iconic Nou Camp Stadium! Now picking up points on the road, Steve McNamara’s boys may start living up to the trophy-challenging billing they had pre-season. Tres bien Messieurs Gigot, Casty and co!

Hull FC meanwhile have been portrayed a real Jekyll & Hyde side this term, which for me can only be down to attitude.

Lee Radford is getting a bit grumpy over the inconsistency of his team this season...and unsurprisingly so. He was damning in his verdict over last weekend’s thumping against Catalans, describing it as painful – and it’s fair to say that could apply to large sections of their season to date. I’ll give them a respectable 6/10.

Easily the surprise package for me so far this season is Salford.

I’ll openly admit I didn’t think the Red Devil’s had a strong enough squad to compete for a top five play-off place, but on current showing they obviously do. Massive credit to my old mate Ian Watson, who has his team playing some very attractive football, led by that man Jackson Hastings. Can they keep this going? Only time will tell, but right now they’re fully deserving of a 7/10 rating.

By their own standards set by previous seasons, it hasn’t been such a good year so far for Castleford.

They’ve been plagued with some horrendous injury problems, more importantly to key players in key positions that has no doubt had a massive bearing on performances. Coach Darryl Powell looks a frustrated man at the moment though never write The Tigers off just yet. There’s plenty of time to improve. For now though - 5/10.

It’s been a topsy-turvy year so far for Wigan, our Betfred Super League champions.

Off-field issues have only added to poor on-field performances that sees the Warriors four points outside the play-off places. Another side who have been riddled with injuries but still have enough quality to win big games. They’ve improved of late and I’m sure there’ll be up there come September – but for now a modest 5/10.

You never know what you’re going to get with Huddersfield, especially this term.

Simon Woolford portrayed a much-frustrated figure when he said his boys had “snatched defeat from the jaws of victory” against Trinity last week – which probably sums up their season thus far. A slightly disappointing 4/10.

Leeds are quite clearly a team lacking in confidence and it’s showed heavily this campaign.

There’s many big names in the Rhinos camp who just aren’t doing it, to be frank. Personally I think they look unfit and in need of a major re-shake if they are to get back to the heights their fans are used to. I’ll have to give them a massively underwhelming 3/10 so far.

Almost there. Hull KR are a side really struggling this season, while showing glimpses of what they’re capable of.

They’ve got several class players at their disposal, including multiple Grand Final winner Danny McGuire, but after a number of injuries they just don’t appear to have the strength in depth to compete in certain games. Not awful, but not great - 4/10.

And finally we have the new boys, London.

You can’t fault the efforts of Danny Ward and his players this season so far. It was always going to be a tough ask coming up from the Championship and retaining most of the squad, however they have competed in the majority of games but just lacked the quality and patience to be able to score more points. I fear it could be a long second half for the Broncos, who I’m giving a respectable 4/10 in their first season back in the top-flight.

So that’s my take on the first 14 games so far in the 2019 Betfred Super League. As I’ve said, nothing is won yet, and I’m sure there will be many more twists and turns before the Grand Final on October 12!

I can only go off what I’ve seen so far, but who can stop the Saints? The price for Saints to win the Grand Final, Challenge Cup, and for James Roby to win the Man of Steel is 20/1- wouldn’t that be nice!
