TRAFFIC cops from across the region are encouraging drivers to fit devices to their cars to prevent them driving if they are over the limit, during a summer drink drive campaign.

The campaign is being led by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and runs from June 24 to July 7.

It comes after 1,575 people were arrested for driving while under the influence of drink or drugs in Durham and Cleveland between June last year and May this year. Of those, 83 per cent were male and 17 per cent were female, while those aged between 26 and 35 accounted for 39 per cent of the total arrests.

Across the region during 2018, 168 people were injured in a collision in which someone was impaired by alcohol or drugs – and drug-driving casualties are on the increase.

During the campaign, staff from the joint unit will carry out random stop checks on vehicles and breath testing.

Officers will also be promoting alcohol interlocks, which stop drivers from starting their vehicles if they are over the alcohol limit.

Durham Constabulary has been working with a provider to fit the devices to vehicles on a voluntary basis, free of charge. The devices require the driver to take a breath test before they start the car. Call 0191 375 2078 or email Checkpoint@durham.pnn.police.uk to get one fitted.
