FIFTY firefighters are tackling a "severe" fire at a disused factory in Smethwick.

Flames ripped through the roof of the factory, off Rolfe Street, Smethwick, at around 1.13pm.

Smoke can be seen billowing into the sky - with around 50 firefighters from stations across the Black Country tackling the blaze.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Two main water jets are being used on the blaze, as well as a hydraulic platform.

"Police are in attendance on Rolfe Street which is closed off as well as the neighbouring side streets.

"We are still at the scene and will be for some time.

"We have set up a perimeter around the scene."

Smethwick Rolfe Street railway station remains open.

West Midlands Fire Service urged people to avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed to avoid the smoke.
