THE campaign to try to Save Stourbridge College has not gone away, union reps and activists say.

Joint union group (UCU, Unison, NEU) and local Labour Party activists say they will be sending an open letter to Stourbridge MP Margot James and West Midlands Mayor Andy Street to urge them to take action to save further and adult education in Stourbridge.

They also plan to launch a petition in the coming weeks asking both to do more to save the college.

Meanwhile - Birmingham Metropolitan College has said the Hagley Road college, which closed to students on July 22, would be open for learners to collect their level 3 vocational results on August 15 and their GCSEs on August 22.

A spokesman for the college said: "Stourbridge teachers will be at the college on both sets of result days in order to support students."

She added that out of 185 staff at the college 145 would be transferring to Dudley College of Technology and Halesowen College - adding: "98 are transferring to Dudley College of Technology and 47 are transferring to Halesowen College."

She confirmed that two staff members from Stourbridge remain at risk of redundancy, and said a consultation was continuing - adding: "We are continuing to seek to identify alternative work for these individuals."

Meanwhile 12 staff have taken voluntary redundancy and 26 staff will be relocated to other BMet sites.

As for the future of the site, she said: "BMet will oversee the sale of the site and is actively exploring options to see if the Hagley Road campus can continue to be used for educational purposes.

"The site is not yet on the open market for sale."
