DASHCAM footage captured the moment a Kidderminster man stepped into the road and was killed by an approaching lorry.

Engineer Godfrey Postings died at the scene after being struck by a lorry on the Worcester Road in Stourport on September 26 this year.

An inquest heard how the 47-year-old was attempting to cross the carriageway to catch up with a friend, who had pulled over to pick him up, when he was hit by the vehicle and propelled into the road.

A statement from the friend, Michael Bradley, which was read at Worcestershire Coroner's Court on Monday (December 16), described how Mr Postings had stopped at the curb to let three of four cars past before stepping out into the road at around 7am.

Mr Bradley had passed Mr Postings and beeped his horn to alert him before pulling over in a layby with the intention of giving his friend a lift to work.

The witness described seeing an orange lorry approaching and swerving towards the middle of the road to avoid hitting Mr Postings.

However, Mr Postings began running towards the middle of the road at the same time and was struck by the lorry.

Reading a statement from passing driver Malgorzata Kasprzyk, who witnessed the crash, senior coroner David Reid said: "She saw him turn towards the road and start crossing it. It looked as if he had done it without looking around.

"She commented to her friend about that at the time, saying she knew a collision was going to happen.

"Although the lorry did brake, it did not manage to avoid Mr Postings."

Another witness, John Gibson, described the lorry travelling at a "normal speed" before the crash.

Bruno Insall, who was driving the lorry which struck Mr Postings, said in a statement that he was travelling well below the 50mph speed limit at the time of the collision.

Mr Insall was driving from Hartlebury Trading Estate to Tenbury Wells - a route he travels every day - and had his lights on at the time.

His statement read: "There was nothing I could do to avoid hitting him. He just stepped out in front of me. I did my best to avoid him."

Dashcam footage from the lorry, which was not shown in court but was viewed by the coroner, reportedly showed Mr Postings crossing the road without looking in the vehicle's direction.

A police collision investigation concluded the lorry was travelling at around 39mph when it struck Mr Postings.

No defects were found on the lorry and the road surface was described as being in an average condition.

A post-mortem found no alcohol or drugs in Mr Postings' system, but noted multiple injuries including severe skull fractures.

The cause of death was recorded as multiple injuries caused by a road traffic collision.

Concluding that Mr Postings died as a result of an accident, Mr Reid said: "Having considered the evidence, I am satisfied that Mr Postings died after stepping out into the road unexpectedly into the path of a lorry.

"The lorry had no warning and Mr Postings died from the injuries he sustained by being struck by the lorry.”

Mr Postings' family did not wish to comment after the inquest, but said to the coroner after the hearing: "We want to thank you and all the emergency services. It won’t be the same without Godfrey, but we’ll celebrate his life every year and do something special to keep his memory going."
