ROSS tennis players recently took part in a 'Festive Fun' mixed doubles tournament and also a competitive match.

Some 34 players took part in the fun event organiser by head coach Steve Barnett.

Partnerships were drawn at random and the competition was run on a round-robin basis.

The eventual winners, after four hours of non-stop action, were Steph Canham and Gavin Mallaleu beating Manda Kiernan and John Duvall into the runners-up spot.

The Ross Tennis Centre mixed side have also been in competition action away at MCS Tennis Club.

Playing the first ranked pair were Hugh Ledger and Val Davies who took some time adjusting to each other’s game and lost the first set against a tricky mother and son team. They settled down and took the second and third set 6-3.

The other Ross pair consisted of Martin Davies and June Savidge who took first set against the second pair and seemed to be on a roll.

However, they lost the second set 4-6 and third 7-5.

Ledger and Davies continued their winning form in their second match managing to put away the frequent lobs, and with constant net pressure secured a victory 6-1, 6-3.

After their marathon first match Davies and Savidge could not find the winning formula and claimed just four games in the second match.

Savidge had played while recovering from a cold, and Martin Davies had stepped in for another injured team member so a winning draw by one game was a welcome result for the Ross side.
