DRIVERS are being urged to avoid a main road on the outskirts of Hereford as firefighters tackle a blaze in a field.

Three electricity poles were on fire along the A4110 between Hereford and Canon Pyon, but the fire service said the blaze has since spread into a field.

Five crews are at the scene of what has been described as a "field fire" by Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

A spokesperson said crews from Fownhope, Hereford, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye were sent to the Canon Pyon road after the call at 2pm on Tuesday.

Around 500 square metres of undergrowth are on fire, after initially starting at three electricity pylons.

Western Power Distribution said 179 of its customers in the area, north of Hereford, lost their supply.

Some 67 have been reconnected, but the firm apologised for the inconvenience.
