A KIDDERMINSTER couple celebrated their wedding reception with a socially distanced twist by holding a street party for friends and family to safely share their big day.

Jake and Sophie Lacey-Watts tied the knot on Sunday, August 16 at St Peter's Church in Cookley, followed by a party for their friends and family on Sophie's mother's street.

Guests were spread out following social distancing measures, with neighbours chipping in with the musical entertainment by lending a hand with performances.

The pair decided to take the unusual step after the government introduced rules limiting the size of indoor wedding receptions as part of coronavirus restrictions.

Thanks to the help of their friends, the couple managed to celebrate their day outside on a Cookley street.

Jake, aged 28, said: "We were supposed to have the wedding reception in Shatterford, but it was cancelled.

"The day was brilliant, it went really well and the neighbours chipped in and helped. It rained but we managed through it. It was a great day."

Food was provided by Captain Cod's in Kidderminster who delivered fish and chips for each guest so food could be served safely at the 1920s themed street bash.

Heavy rain could not even ruin the big day, with the newlyweds sharing their first dance under a gazebo in the middle of the street to The Cure's Just Like Heaven.

The couple have been together for six years after meeting through a mutual friend in Cheltenham.

Jake added: "Personally, my highlight of the day was turning around and seeing Sophie walk down the aisle but seeing the groomsmen carry a gazebo into the middle of the road so we could have our first dance was a great moment."
