Whether it’s gas, electricity or oil, fuel is expensive so it pays to plug the gaps to make every energy pound spent count.

About 20 per cent of heat is lost through poorly fitting doors and windows; sticky draught excluder is all that’s needed here and it’s cheap and easy to fit.

Roof spaces can leak up to a quarter of the heat, heat that we’re paying for. Loft insulation is much cheaper than cavity wall insulation and double glazing, making it a good value investment.

If the existing loft insulation has been around for a while it may need topping up, no need to remove it, just add another layer.

Keeping heating bills down isn’t all about big ticket items. How we heat our rooms can make a big difference.

1. Use individual radiator thermostats.

2 Don’t hang damp washing on radiators to dry.

3. Place a sheet of tin foil behind each radiator to reflect more heat into the room.

4. Set the central heating timer to come on about half an hour before getting up and again half an hour before getting home from work can save big bucks.

Finally, there are lots of no-cost ways to stay warm: dress in layers, close the curtains as soon as it starts to get dark and add an extra blanket or wear bed socks to avoid using the heating overnight and don’t forget to make regular checks on energy deals, loyalty comes at a price!
