POLICE were called to break up a gathering of protestors outside Kidderminster Town Hall on New Year's Eve.

A video posted on Facebook shows a large group of people partying whilst loud pop music is played in the town centre.

The video also shows people holding megaphones, whilst messages including “Covid is a crime against humanity, it’s not a virus” can be heard.

Wyre Forest District Councillor Leigh Whitehouse told The Shuttle a number of residents informed him about the gathering on the evening.

He also highlighted that between 15 to 25 people are seen at the gathering, with some "actively encouraging others within Kidderminster to join them."

The councillor said: "I absolutely, firmly condemn such behaviour and hope the police will exercise their full powers against those involved.

"Clearly with the new Covid variant, people are very nervous about what the future might hold.

"As a proud local councillor for this town centre, I am deeply saddened by this, it is not acceptable.

"Whilst our doctors and nurses work double shifts to keep people alive, hideous gatherings such as this take place."

Tier three restrictions ban households from mixing indoors and outdoors but up to six people could meet in outdoor spaces such as parks or public gardens.

Inspector Dave King said: “Officers were called to reports of a gathering of a number of people protesting outside Kidderminster Town Hall on New Year’s Eve late in the evening and who were dispersed.

“I can confirm that an investigation into this incident and those present is on-going.

"While the majority of people in around Kidderminster are adhering to national guidance and rules, I would ask that to help stop the spread of the virus it’s absolutely necessary that everyone continues to follow the regulations.”
