A FORMER wartime nurse has celebrated her 100th birthday with friends at The Wharf Care Home in Stourport.

Staff and residents celebrated the "incredible life" of Doreen Gordon on Tuesday, March 2.

Mrs Gordon was born in Southampton in 1921 and served as a nurse at the city's hospital during the Second World War.

It was here that she had to help to evacuate her patients when the hospital was destroyed with incendiary bombs.

Mrs Gordon met her husband, who was a doctor at the hospital, and the pair married in 1943.

After the war, they lived in Oxford before settling in Bewdley with their two children in 1952.

Mrs Gordon has four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and staff at The Wharf Care Home say Mrs Gordon "beams with love and pride for her family".

She is a talented pianist and a keen rugby supporter, and care home staff say she has "a strong appetite for life".

A spokesman for the home said: "A talented pianist and a keen rugby supporter, Mrs Gordon retains a strong appetite for life and particularly enjoys The Wharf's exercise and singing classes.

"Balloon tennis can get very competitive if you're on team Mrs G!

"We celebrate the incredible life of this remarkable lady.

"A joy to be with, fascinating to listen to and a wonderful sense of humour that brings much laughter to our home.

"Happy 100th birthday to the incredible Mrs Doreen Gordon, truly an amazing lady."

Paul Turvey, home manager, added: "The whole team at The Wharf would like to wish Mrs Gordon a very happy 100th birthday.

"It was a delight to see her enjoying her special celebrations and what a celebration it was too!

"A big thanks to all the team who made this remarkable achievement such a special memory."
