A recently re-elected county councillor says he discovered a man in desperate need of help while out canvassing.

Councillor Richard Udall was out in St John’s for the recent local elections when he says he discovered a man who had become disconnected with the outside world.

He said: “The man in his fifties told me he was dyslexic and could not read or write - his former partner had done all the reading and writing for him.

“He was in debt, his benefits had been stopped, he was in danger of losing his job and he could not communicate with the outside world.

“He was turning to alcohol and was increasingly desperate.

“I took up his case and referred him for help. Adult Social Care contacted him within hours and arrangements are now being put in place to help him with his needs.

“They are also in the process of arranging a full assessment to ensure his longer-term needs are met. His problems are not over, but now he can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“We only met him because we were canvassing in his road, how many other people, just like him, are out there, need help and don’t know how to find it?

Cllr Udall added: “Cuts to Adult Social Care will have significant consequences, we need to raise awareness and help people to know they are not alone.”

Hannah Perrott, assistant director of communities, said: “Supporting our residents to reach their full potential is something we’re very passionate about here in Worcestershire, and the development of our people and communities strategy showcases our commitment to this.

“We’re working hard to ensure everyone in Worcestershire receives information, advice and support about help that is available to them locally through our Here2Help service.

“Our Learning Services are available to help individuals improve their reading and writing as well as providing access to a wide range of other learning opportunities.”

Resident Kim Bishopp was among those who praised the councillor on Facebook.

She wrote: “Wow. That’s amazing. If that doesn’t make you proud of what you do then it should. Fantastic work - you don’t just shove a leaflet through a letterbox - you care. Well done. I’m sure that family are so grateful to you.”
